In 2003, I needed "more power" to handle an increased lawn cutting task. The old 1/3 acre chore was easy to do with a Craftsman push mower. The new task of 3 acres (half grass) gave the excuse for a "technology upgrade." While I did my upgrade search, I had loan of my father in-laws Cub Cadet 1230. Its a great little 32 inch riding lawn mower. It did the job, but I always felt it was straining to meet the challenge.

A friend at work bought a Kubota BX-22 compact utility tractor (CUT) for use on his property. He invited me over to take a look and I was hooked. The BX-22 outfitted with an optional 60-inch mid-mount mower looked to be a perfect match. The base BX-22 comes with a detachable front end loader (FEL) and backhoe (BH). The combined package was in truth a little over the top for my needs, but I could easily come up with lots of projects that would make them invaluable.

It truly is a sweet machine. The 22 HP diesel engine is a compact little powerhouse . Here's mine, with one of my friends digging with the FEL. I recommend the Kubota highly. It's a well built and easy to maintain machine.

I've also picked up some very useful attachments. A Bearcat chipper-shredder and a 5-foot back blade. The chipper makes fast work of sticks up to 5 inches in diameter. It is truley scary to watch it eat a stick even half that size. The back blade makes short work of the snow that we occasionally see in the winter. I previously used the FEL to scoop and push snow around, but now find the back blade to be much faster.

Another great resource it the Tractor by Net forum. It has lots of great information that's presented by some very colorful personalities.
